Mossy Antennaria

Mossy Antennaria

It was quite the sight that greeted me when I noticed a few little plants of Small-leaved Pussytoes (Antennaria parvifolia) growing in amongst this matt of moss at the base of a white spruce tree. Usually, these little plants like to grow in drier areas than where moss usually likes to inhabit, however, I’m also reminded by this picture that Nature is always full of unexpected surprises.

Lone Plantago

Lone Plantago

A walk out in the Red Deer River valley revealed some pretty cool plants to photograph, just like this Plantago eriopoda (Saline Plantain) I found, with a neighbour in the background in the top right corner.

The Juncos are Coming!

The Juncos are Coming!

As the geese begin to head further and further north, so do the Dark-eyed Juncos, such as this lovely little bird I caught a couple of pictures of back on April 16, 2017.

They will be coming! Spring is nearly here!

Lavatera Pollinator

Lavatera Pollinator

This little bumblebee was sure having quite the time with this lavatera bloom! By going from one flower to another, this bee helps move pollen from one flower to another to help propagate seed. Without pollinators such as this little bee, plants would have a much harder time reproducing.

A Solomon’s Seal

A Solomon’s Seal

One lovely forest-dwelling member of the Lily family is none other than the Star-flowered Solomon’s Seal (Maianthemum stellatum). These native forbs bloom from June to July, bearing little fragrance and turn into dark purple berries by August.
