Roadside Bull

Roadside Bull

A day before my birthday I and my mother were fortunate enough to see this bull elk on the side of the road on the way to Jasper for a birthday weekend get-away.

The Juncos are Coming!

The Juncos are Coming!

As the geese begin to head further and further north, so do the Dark-eyed Juncos, such as this lovely little bird I caught a couple of pictures of back on April 16, 2017.

They will be coming! Spring is nearly here!

Lavatera Pollinator

Lavatera Pollinator

This little bumblebee was sure having quite the time with this lavatera bloom! By going from one flower to another, this bee helps move pollen from one flower to another to help propagate seed. Without pollinators such as this little bee, plants would have a much harder time reproducing.

Gorgeous Pine Grosbeaks

Gorgeous Pine Grosbeaks

One of the Canadian winter bird favourites is the Pine Grosbeak. These gorgeous reddish birds aren’t around for the show, but it’s so difficult not to miss their flashy red colours when they pay a visit to the feeder. The males, in particular, are flashy, whereas the females are brown with some yellowish tinge on their heads.

Blue Jay at the Feeder

Blue Jay at the Feeder

Besides chickadees, blue jays are also common Canadian wintering birds.

Unfortunately for the chickadees, these bigger birds love to hog the feeders for themselves. Usually one is enough to chase off the rest of the little birds, but when two or more come around, there’s no way a little chickadee will dare grab some seed… unless they can flit in and out to grab a seed they can deal with on a nearby branch.

Hairy on an Aspen

Hairy on an Aspen

The Hairy Woodpecker is one such bird that loves to stick around in Canadian winters. As long as there’s suet and plenty of trees to perch and peck holes in, a Hairy is a happy camper.
